Investment strategies for distressed markets with The Sentient Group

The Sentient Group is an independent private equity firm specialising in direct investments in the global metals, minerals and energy sectors. Formed in 2000 by former executives from AMP Private Capital in Sydney Australia, Sentient manages over $2.5bn through its four Global Resources Funds. It has made investments in projects whose commodities range from gold and copper to geothermal energy and coal seam gas. Sentient has made investments in every continent on the globe except Antarctica where mining is not allowed. Sentient is a Cayman based company with operating offices in Sydney, Montreal and Vancouver. It currently employs over 40 people including 17 investment professionals. Sentient’s investor base includes university endowment funds, foundations, public and private pension funds, family offices and banks spread across the globe.
Nicholas Mead is a Partner of The Sentient Group which he joined in 2001 and is CEO of its operating subsidiary Sentient Asset Management Canada in Montreal. He has over thirteen years of private equity experience having been an investment analyst at AMP Private Capital focussing on resources and telecommunications investments. Mr Mead also had a short stint as resources analyst at Cazenove in their Sydney office. Mr Mead has a First Class Honours degree in Spanish from Monash University in Melbourne and a Masters Degree in Latin American Studies from St Antony’s College, Oxford.
