Crush the Rock
The gold-containing rock is crushed into small pieces, like gravel or sand. This makes it easier for the gold to be separated out.
Build a Heap
The crushed rock is piled up into a big hill, or "heap," on a plastic-lined pad to catch the liquid that will be used later.
Add the Leaching Solution
A special liquid (usually a mix of cyanide and water) is sprayed or dripped over the heap. This liquid trickles down through the rocks.
Gold Dissolves
As the solution flows through the heap, it dissolves the gold out of the rock. The gold ends up in the liquid.
Collect the Gold-Laden Liquid
The liquid that comes out the bottom of the heap is collected in pipes or tanks. It now contains gold.
Get the Gold Out of the Liquid
The gold is separated from the liquid using chemicals or filters. This leaves you with nearly pure gold.
Recycle and Repeat
The liquid is cleaned and reused in the process, and the leftover rock (now without gold) stays in the heap.
