If it was up to me we would phase out fossil fuels altogether and live more sustainably using renewable energy and maybe Hydrogen. Unfortunately, with the world population increasing exponentially and the Billions of people in the emerging economies of China and India wanting to improve their standard of living to emulate the western world in the near future, I think fossil fuels will still be used in ever increasing amounts for the time being.
UCG can meet those demands economically. Subsidence is no more of a problem for UCG than underground mining.
