I've been looking at various cheeses for a month or so, mostly because my favourite wholistic doctor now classes natural cheese as a superfood. The problem is that the majority of cheese producers now use a genetically modified rennet in the cheesemaking process which changes the nutritional profile of the end product. The modified rennet is made with mold spores among other substances and should be avoided according to this doctor. I went to the local supermarket and had a look for a natural rennet cheese, out of 6 brands only one didn't have the words "non animal rennet" written on the ingredient blurb, (Mainland cheese Fonterra N.Z.) I emailed Mainland customer relations to find out what sort of rennet they use, here's the reply:
"Thank you for contacting Fonterra Australia with your query regarding Mainland Extra Tasty Cheese.? We can advise that the Mainland Tasty, Extra Tasty, Vintage Cheese, & Epicure cheese block products contains animal rennet. The Colby, Edam, Gouda, and Swiss blocks all contain non animal rennet. We trust this resolves your query and would like to thank you for your interest in this product. We hope you will continue to enjoy our products in the future. Kind Regards,"
Their extra tasty cheese is now my go to.
