This phenomenon has only been noticed (over civilian areas at least) since around the early 90's. Hence all the efforts of doublethink to make people think that this is just 'normal', but not like the normal we observed prior to that time. And why would you assume that they would quick-kill you in this way anyway? How much collateral damage would their precious Gaia suffer in the process?
