Traveled thru Sth America in 81 but more recently thru Chile when we went to Antarctica.
Went to the Atacama Desert which you could include with the Altiplano in Bolivia/Peru.
Spent the bucks and stayed at Explora in Torres del Paine in Patagonia.
Could recommend both .
Would suggest Costa Rica in Central America.
