BUENOS AIRES (miningweekly.com) The Chilean government continues to work on a bill to temporarily raise mining royalties, Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said this week.

"The project is in the hands of the president of the nation, Sebastin Piera, he said.

There are technical and political issues to be considered, and Piera will decide when a new bill is sent to Congress for debate, he said.

In April, Pinera outlined plans to finance the redevelopment and construction work needed to rebuild the country after a devastating earthquake earlier this year.

One of the measures proposed was an increase to the royalties paid by copper miners, but the opposition-led Congress in Chile rejected the proposal for increased mining royalties on July 8.

The new proposal includes slight modifications compared to the previous document, Golborne said, without providing any details.

"There are still some points that need to be discussed, which will be done when the president finds it convenient ", he added.

Lawmakers approved the rest of the $3-billion reconstruction plan, but it was decided that the mining royalty proposal would be considered independently.

Opposition politicians blocked the proposal last month because they said it did not go far enough.
