Politicians do this kinda stuff here coming up to an election trying to win over votes too. Getting it passed is a whole other story.
they want these mines produced, it will give them a great boost in the economy especially being hit as hard as they have with COVID.
taxes, local employment, foreign investment would be too much to throw away over just tax increases IMO
you got locals at breaking point finically, what would you do to get there vote?
Short term - feed them false hope unfortunately.
long term - make sure they have as many jobs available in the country as possible
