W_Sam, different people short for different reasons i would guess.
Some do it cause they can and they have the ability to make money from it. They can do it with a bad stock or a good stock currently viewed bad by the market due to different factors - micro, macro environment, temp. short med. term debt issues etc etc..there are those who like to short a very good, but out of flavour, stock; driving it to a profitable level and then taking a long position on it because they know its going to rebound. Numerous ways to play this game..
