Delano made a large fortune trading opium in Canton (now Guangzhou), China.[9][10] Opium, a highly addictive narcotic related to heroin, was illegal in China, and British traders had introduced large-scale opium smuggling into China to gain further access to Chinese export markets to meet skyrocketing demand for such Chinese products as tea, porcelain, silk and furniture. The vast increase in opium smuggling into China resulted in millions of people newly addicted to opium in China, and in an unprecedented Chinese trade imbalance with Britain and the U.S., which in turn resulted in the First Opium War of 1840-1843
The Opium Wars were two wars which were waged between the Qing dynasty and Western powers in the mid-19th century. The First Opium War, fought in 1839-1842 between the Qing and Great Britain, was triggered by the dynasty's campaign against the opium trade; the Second Opium War was fought between the Qing and Britain and France, 1856-1860. In each war, the European forces used recently developed warfare technology to defeat the Qing forces and compelled the government to grant favorable tariffs, trade concessions, and territory.
