    China’s coking coal imports surged 20.89% from September but dropped 10.07% from a year ago to 5.44 million tonnes in October, the second consecutive month-on-month increase, according to data from the General Administration of Customs (GAC) on November 21.

    Australia remained the largest supplier, exporting 3.14 million tonnes of coking coal to China last month, surging 43.38% month on month and up 29.02% year on year.

    Coking coal imports from Mongolia, the second-largest supplier, rose 25.0% from September but down 37.94% from the year prior to 1.15 million tonnes in October.

    Canada followed with 0.55 million tonnes of exports to China in the same month, falling 24.66% from the previous month and down 37.44% from a year ago, while Russia exported 0.52 million tonnes of coking coal to the country, up 79.31% month on month but down 24.47% year on year.

    In the first ten months this year, China imported a total of 49.79 million tonnes of coking coal, down 18.07% from a year ago.

    Australia contributed 24.01 million tonnes or 48.22% of the total, climbing 2.51% year on year, followed by Mongolia, which increased exports by 3.21% on year to 11.90 million tonnes during the same period.

    Additionally, China’s exports of coking coal stood at 53,539 tonnes in October, surging 31.47% from September and up 54.06% from a year earlier, customs data showed.

    Over January-October, the country exported a total 648,504 tonnes of coking coal, down 28.41% year on year.
