EU ministers meet to discuss climate change in Be?chat?w

Be?chat?w is the site of one of Europe's most highly polluting power plants

Deputy energy ministers from across the European Union are due to gather in the Polish town of Be?chat?w on Thursday to discuss the bloc's transition to a carbon-neutral economy over the next 40 years.

The goal of a carbon-neutral zero-emissions economy has proven to be a controversial
one with regards to Poland in recent weeks. The country reportedly opposed a widely supported commitment to cutting carbon emissions to 85 percent by 2050, during a meeting of EU environment ministers in June.

The Polish economy ministry, which is hosting the meeting, wants the discussion to focus on alternative technologies to reduce emissions, as well as a careful analysis of the economic impact that reducing emissions could have on Poland as a nation, reports Rzeczpospolita.

Coal is currently Poland's major sources of energy and, indeed, Be?chat?w hosts Europe's largest coal-fueled thermal power plant
