China devised its "Made in China 2025" 10 years ago which had 10 areas of research/manufacture of which auto manufacturing is merely 1 and it financially backed the strategic plan and now we're seeing the results.
Currently China manufactures over 30 million vehicles a year out of a global 94 million and China is increasing its production while others are reducing theirs. Trump Tariff wars will in the longer term benefit China IMO.
We dont believe in State Capitalism so why crib about China's ? China's 30% of Global Manufacturing and Trade (and gaining) simply means that the Chinese State Capitalism is knocking the socks off Western Capitalism and all that the 2 biggest Western Economies (US & EU) can do is to bung import tariffs on Chinese imports .
This Gig failed the UK 9British Empire) a hundred years ago so why should we thing that it will now work for the USA & the EU?
We have a FTA with China, so Trump Merchantilism should mean much Cheaper Chinese vehicles in Aus but much higher food pricing, particuluarly Beef.
We made a massive mistake over a generation to throw half a $Billion at Multinational Auto Manufacturers when we simply should have been developing a State owned vehicle component manufacturing such as aluminium castings etc etc and then diversify trade to all auto manufacturing countries.
