The analysis seems a bit backwards. The origin of debt crisis in US was that the NINJAs(no income no job or assets) could borrow at very LOW interest rate. The interest rate did not adequately compensate for the very high risk of the loan involved. That points to the other reason of the bubble: Alan Greenspan reduced the interest rate so low that risks of ALL loans were not properly priced. High interest rate in itself is actually a healthy sign, shows that banks were not lending money out indiscriminately.
As for your NST investment, I believe you are not going to get your money back. The withdrawal of QE will probably smash gold price towards $1200 rather quickly.
