To help inform the debate, despite the Chinese ....er... "ban" on Australian coal imports, here is commentary today from New Hope Coal, one of Australia's major exporters:



Evidently, demand for coal comes from places around the world other than China.

And that demand certainly appears to be very strong given the global US$ benchmark coal price is currently almost 40% higher than it was even before the onset of Covid.

Now who would have thunk that?
