    I think they will do this across all commodities, and not just gold. They have learnt over the last few months that by buying up the end product they are improving the profitability of the overseas mines and making them better able to withstand pressure from a Chinese takeover.

    It is much cheaper in the long run to own the mines, and that will now be their method of attack from now on, ie trying to depress commodity prices and isolating the miners by selective deals. I doubt if our government has any sense of how to deal with this or even really wants to.
