Manufacturing in Oz eased off to only niche production because of not being able to compete on labour costs and because of our isolation and lack of economy of scale .
We still DO manufacture high quality pharmaceuticals (I worked for one) and food prodcts because of assurance of quality which trumps cost at times .

But Labor have mapped out for us a future based on renewables , energy production storage and export and increasing energy dependant industries such as fertiliser manufacture , ammonia , aluminium and also I believe , steel production* ..... all in competition with China .
We have the sun and wind and entrepenuers like Twiggy Forrest willing to get stuck in .

Surprised you aren't aware of this plan ...we will never be as big as China but certainly are on a good path and quite capable of being more successful .

*Talking direct reduced (green hydrogen) iron ore in situ in the Pilbara with plentiful relaible sunshine .
