Why shouldn't China have nukes to protect themselves ? In the 60s, in the border conflict with Russia, The Soviet Union almost used nuclear bombs against China.
In the Korean War in the 50s, there was talk of the US using their nuclear bombs against China.
China is the ONLY nuclear power to have pledged not to first use its nuclear warheads, the US and Russia have never made that pledge.
The Japanese attacked and brutalised the Chinese twice, in WW1 and WW2. I don't think the Japanese will ever try that again, if they do, the Chinese will bomb the Japanese back to the stone age.
