My point is that it's always the mismanagement of the paper and not of the gold which brings in the demise. With or without gold standard; they printed more "paper gold"( or IOU's) then there was physical gold/ assets to back it up, so it all went bust in the end. The basis is as simple as that. Same thing happens over and over again and gold is the perfect hedge for this "mismanagement of paper".

Also when you invest in gold you just preserve your purchasing power over the long run; investing in gold mines is where the true profits lie imho.
