The Chinese does not have to do, and they don't want to do, what the US have done to remain number 1 economically and militarily.
They have come from near bottom of the list to number 2, in 40 years, without having to invade another country. So why would they need to change? Why go around the world killing people and engender hate towards you?
If you go through press releases after press releases, they have consistently said they don't want to be the top dog militarily or seeking hegemony.
Now economically, they certainly want to be number 1 - hence the BRI.
This is because they still have over 500M people earning low income. Their objective - as part of their social philosophy, is to lift them into the middle class.
People forget that, even though they have the most billionaires and over 350M in the middle class, China still have over 500M people earning between $800 to $1000 per month.
People in China, just like people all over the world, have dreams of having a house, a car, a family and two children.
You should note this, there are NO Chinese Military bases near Australia, NZ, UK, US, Canada or EU. None whatsoever. But there are hundreds of US military bases surrounding them in the South China Seas. They are building those bases (just as we would if we were surrounded) as forward warning bases in the event of war.
