Like you mentioned, that was 40 years ago.
The whole society has changed drastically. From day to day living, cultural influence, ecosystem, political awareness, to self-esteem, inner spirit and the sense of Han majority.
People have different reaction under different political system and culture. My observation is that class different absolutely matters. In China, most powerful class are CCP leaders, so you cannot publicly criticize them, which is the same thing in western where no one is dare to question the Jews. Guess why American presidents always visit the Wailing wall? And why ScoMo sucks US balls?
It's hard to understand the difference between culture if you don't take the hidden rules into consideration. And media is controlled by a small group of people, hence why we have restrained and reported so called world.
