Hong Kong is still under the Westminster system of Gov.
Its judges like ours, are appointed for life. Many of these senior judges were appointed when the British rule HKG as a colony. They can't be dismissed unless they broke the law. Alternatively, they can resign. Otherwise, they serve for life.
Another fun fact, we used to have the Privy Council which was based in the UK, and its rulings were BINDING on Australian courts and laws. Imagine the UK court deciding what are Binding Laws in Australia. Were we ever independent???
And it was Only abolished in 1986, leaving our High Court as the Only avenue to appeals.
1986 wasn't really that long ago. Some could argue we were Only truly Independent from 1986.
