Just Imagine Chine colonising a reef just a few miles beyond our
national waters limit and then claiming it as Chinese territory.
This in effect would mean that we loose ocean territory because
if it is recognised as Chinese territory, then china would own
ocean up to half ways between this artificial island and our coastline.
Furthermore we wouldn't want Chinese nuclear weapons parked
that close to Australia.
Just have a gander at where yhese artificial islands are/
They'r smack bang in a triangle between Brunai.Indonesis, Vietnam
and the Phillipines which is a known rich oil/gas region and
thousands of Ks from mainland China.

And that's what it's about. China wants the resources and the USA don't want to let them have it. Simple as that.
I don't think Australia can afford to tick China off, and I hope we're not stupid enough to try...
