As long as a (parasitic) stalinist bureaucracy is able to quench its insatiable desire for a life of luxury it will not be a threat to neighbours. They above all, however, thirst for buffer states that would slow down an invading army.

In the USSR party bureaucrats had access to special shops with luxury Western goods. The plebs though had to shop with ration cards in shops with often empty shelves of basics. The bureaucrats saw this as paradise, for them and they jailed any pleb who disagreed generally using psychiatrists to pronounce such a pleb as mentally ill and in need of re-education.

However if the bureaucracy feels that their life of privilege is severely threatened then they will act in a way to protect their paradise. Tiananmen Square was a signal that the Maoists were terrified and so they acted. Their history speaks for itself. They are quite happy to kill many millions of their own in order to preserve their luxuries. .

So Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, Taiwan will all act as buffer states.

The development and dispersal of covid not to mention the installation of a dictator-for-life in Xi has to be seen as moves based on extreme fear. Do they know something we don't?
