China May Buy Brazil's Uranium, Swap Nuclear Know-How (Update2)
May 26 (Bloomberg) -- Brazil may sell China non-enriched uranium and exchange nuclear-energy technology as the nations aim to enhance trade and political ties, Brazil's Science and Technology Ministry said in a statement.
Chinese officials will travel to Brazil in August for discussions about uranium purchases and possible uses of the South American country's nuclear-energy technology, Brazil's Science and Technology Minister Eduardo Campos said.
``We have no agreement yet,'' Campos told reporters at a World Bank conference in Shanghai. ``We plan to explore greater cooperation.''
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is on a six-day visit to Beijing and Shanghai, is seeking a closer political alliance with China and increased trade with the world's seventh-largest economy. China has plans to build 11 nuclear power plants, Campos said.
The uranium will be for peaceful uses such as nuclear power plants and X-ray machines, Campos said. In April, Brazil began talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency to allow inspection of a facility to be used for plutonium-enrichment, after the Washington Post reported that the country had refused inspectors access to the plant.
Yesterday, Lula said in a speech in Beijing that the two countries may develop uranium mines together. Today, he declined to comment further at a news conference in Shanghai.
``There's no such project planned,'' Brazilian Mining and Energy Minister Dilma Rousseff said in an interview in Shanghai. ``Mining is my area, and there's nothing to that.''
