she really wasn’t very nice. But she would have had to have been as smart as to get to the position in the first place. China, and most places that had emperors (and that includes English before the ruler was made a figurehead only) were nasty places. People were primarily there for the enjoyment and enrichment of nobles.
I reckon most countries have just reverted to a version of the aristocracy and we fool ourselves if we think otherwise.
