-Until March 2021 they’ll be on $650 a fortnight, add my suggested 25% carrot to get off ass brings it to $400/week. Good point you made, so okay put them industry award rate then they do x hours to to earn the $400. More if they choose to paid by employer.
-There are plenty of jobs that they can do that won’t impact current workers. Particularly ones I mentioned regarding councils and streetscape. It’s done overseas, same with hotel/motel concierge and ‘security’ in many shops. But that is requested by government for businesses to take them on so here it will seem authoritarian.
-If they just sit out back just smoking etc then yes they can go home and no longer receive free money. Doubt they will be on the computer looking for job, playing games most likely.
-Well if they are working like everyone else it would make sense to give them same benefits. Not everyone gets annual leave but with this example it gives them a small reward. They would be on a permanent tax payer funded holiday anyway if they were still just relaxing at home.
-They will only be working around 4 hours a day, plenty of time to look for job when they get home. Or do you think most jobseekers are trawling the internet 10 hours a day looking for a job? Getting out of the house in this example isn’t about looking for job, it’s taking care of psychological aspect... get them out of daily routine of just hanging around. Gives them boost.
-Well at that age and situation I’m sure I can cut them some slack in my authoritarian proposal. I think most Australians wouldn’t consider them bludgers at that point, and personally I won’t care paying taxes to support someone like that. I’m mainly referring to younger abled bodied people. It’s not black or white, plenty shades of grey in between so of course I’m not suggesting a one size fits all. But then again just because someone is 60yrs old doesn’t mean they are useless. I’m sure there are many jobs/tasks that they are capable of doing, I think it would be a bit off giving a 60yr old a brickies labourer position.
I know it’s not easy getting a job you want, I was out of work for seven months but luckily I had enough saved to get me through. But handing out money and creating a culture of unproductivity isn’t the way to go (yes I know, not everyone in welfare makes a career out of it). Actually that reminds me, another thing that needs to done is employers need to take on less experienced people. Needing two years+ experience driving a HR truck, forklift, pick and packing, kitchen hand etc is a bit of a joke.
