This is a genuine question, if China does have the vertical integration which allows it to offset mining losses further downstream, cathodes, batteries, evs etc

Bifurcation of lithium market between China and the West isn't going to solve much if majority of other constituents which make up a battery and EV continue to come from China. Every western battery maker to date has and will at least in the near term continue to source majority of its materials from China, anodes, cathodes, electrolyte etc.

So if there is truth in the argument that china is willing to move losses around while still making a margin downstream to capture market share, whats to stop them from opening what would otherwise be consider unviable mining operations?

Totally agree as shown with Lepidolite, being profitable at mine is a huge bonus. LTR have no downstream facility so have to be profitable at mine hence why his majesty kicked off about Vilasto not being profitable but as the figures show he is wrong.
