The Pacific Islands in general and PNG have always been of Great Strategic and Economical interest to Beijing.
PNG is rich in gas, gold , oil, timber , coffee , rice , farming , fishing etc.
STO is a larger player in PNG.
One can read between the lines or take things the way they are reported.
Given the Belt and Road initiative is not that far from PNG ,I would say PNG will become more and more important to Beijing.
