A FINAL investment decision on the $35 billion Ichthys gas project moved a step closer yesterday when the Territory Government leased Inpex land for a workers' village.
The Crown lease is for seven years.
The land at Howard Springs will then be handed back to the Government - and could possibly form the core of a seniors' complex.
Chief Minister Paul Henderson said a "considerable amount" of the workers' village construction work would go to NT businesses.
"The entire community - from small retailers through to large construction companies - will benefit from the Ichthys project," he said.
"Darwin is fast becoming the oil and gas hub of north Australia and the Territory Government is doing all it can to support this growth and make sure Territorians get the most out of it.
"The Territory is about to undergo major growth in our resources sector that will underpin our economy for the future, providing training, job and business opportunities for Territorians."
The village will house 2700 workers at the peak of construction.
"The village will be built with the community in mind and incorporate a number of design features, to ensure Howard Springs maintains its rural character," Mr Henderson said.
"The village will be surrounded by a vegetation buffer and include low-level lighting, secure entry and single-storey buildings
