Since I'm over here in the US, I had to find a similar comparison. I originally thought that the AU $0.10 coin was close to the US dime, but that is not the case. Its diameter (according to Wikipedia) is 23.60 mm.
The closest coin in the US to size would be the $0.25 quarter at 24.26mm, but I still think the size comparison with the thumbnail is a better gauge visually.
