regarding the short positions, let's not forget that Credit Suisse and UBS both closed their large positions out in June and Sept 22:

and note that the ASIC open interests reports / data reproduced by shortman suggested the aggregate short positions hardly moved
short reporting is self-assessment and you can clearly see these banks did not comply with the reporting. if they did comply, i honestly believe you would have seen much higher short position %s.
i've said this before, but i believe retail are shorting and the banks are accumulating.
makes sense given reporting of short positions is integrated into most retail broker services.
further evidence blackrock inc accumulated a > 5% position in under a month aggressively buying in Dec. do they accumulate this position only to start distributing now? why would they do this?
