I can definitely sympathise with this sentiment.
Media pumps stories of imminent critical mineral shortages. Retail positions themselves in those critical mineral plays. Then in the meantime all their living costs go up and they are slowly forced to sell out of those positions just to get by.
Not sure if it's by design though. But the result could end up being as you say.
