In addition to that the general sentiment can be reflected in Alcoa and their strip mining throughout the state forests to the south of Perth. They have been tearing through the area for the last 40+ years and have a licence to kill for a very long time into the future. This is solely in state forest, forest that was arguably left alone for the sole purpose of being mined.
Now I am not saying they or Chalice won't and aren't facing increased scrutiny but this sort of environmental destruction is par for course over here in the west whether that is the way it should be or not.
The forest they are chewing up and spitting out is of far higher quality and importance than the Julimar state forest.
Initiatives like retaining the top soil and planting a diverse range of natives endemic to the region help with their environmental approvals.
As you have mentioned, no matter what there will be people that resist the idea and they will hold a voice but at the end of the day it is unlikely to be loud enough or strong enough to make any material impact.
