Elongation of ALA to the longer chains (EPA/DHA) is woefully inefficient, to the point of almost non-existent. Not only that, but when conversion of ALA to EPA occurs, the conversion to DHA is further restricted.
Including ALA in your diet along with a background of saturated fat, you get a conversion to EPA in the 6% region, with conversion to DHA around 3.8% (recent studies show that this could be much lower at around 0.1%!!), if you are like a majority of aussies and eating a diet high in omega 6 poly unsaturated fatty acids-PUFAs (industrial seed oils such as rapeseed(canola), sunflower, vegetable etc.) that conversion is further restricted (40 to 50%).
High doses of the fishoils is also undesirable, as with any PUFA they are highly oxidative, which leads to inflammation in the body. Keep your omega-6 intake low and then balance with omega-3.
