    I would think that you need a trading platform/online broker if you want to trade shares. Placing orders via a full service broker is for long term investors only.

    By education, it should consist of reading books, attending seminars, participating in shares forums (eg. HC), and most importantly, paper trading.

    Once you are very comfortable, then you should use real money.
