Our dog loved our chooks. If the wind blew the door of the chook house opened and they wandered out, then our dog would chase them to their death. Hence, once a chook was spied outside all of us kids were on duty - "Quick, the chooks are out" - we chased the dog which chased the chooks. Silly chooks didn't go back into their house, just ran around the yard, until our dog was caught.

If an egg was dropped in the kitchen we invited the dog inside who licked every last bit of it. If the shell was still intact, he would roll on the egg, wagging his tail in great excitement, trying to break the egg.

Yes, eggs and chooks are fun for young families, especially. My mother wore special, fully enclosed shoes in order to enter the chook house to find the eggs. Hence "chooky shoes" were an insult offered to other family members who may have been wearing old, ugly shoes, lol.
