We had a small number of chooks for quite a few years, 6-8 mostly. There was a ready built shed on the place we bought.
I'd let them out in the morning and shut them up at dusk and they'd mostly find their own food.
Entertaining to watch but never let two roosters mature togethe, they'll fight till one of them gets killed. And it's hard to break them up.
