I was given two generic chooks and a duck by a neighbour some years back. Later I bought six chooks and a rooster as well.
As the duck considered herself the boss there was a drawn out battle between duck and rooster for control of the hens.
After a few weeks they organised themselves into two camps with each commandant having 4 hens each.
When the baby chickens hatched the duck assisted the mothers (from both camps)and kept watch day and night for pythons crows etc. She would squawk her head off if anything came near. We have a cattle dog but he's a slacker.
A duck or goose is excellent protection/early warning system
    of predators, especially at night.
Our duck was pure white with orange beak and feet. Maybe this is called an indian runner duck(?)
If you get a goose/duck make sure it is female.
If it is male it will try and get it on with your hens.
We gave away the rooster for this reason as the duck was not amused!
