    re: christian fundamentalism/billb The old testament said an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, only for the reason because in those days if you killed someone they would kill your whole family back so it was Gods way of making things more equal and to stop people killing other innocent people, then he sent Christ who expanded on it and said turn the other cheek.

    Those of us who have studied the Talmud....which was put into writing some 2,000 years ago....in other words codified what was being taught orally,made it quire clear that ...eye for an eye ..etc etc...was not to be taken literally.

    In fact the intent was that the value of the damage caused (assessed by a competent Beth Din) was paid to the injured party, or in case of death to the closest survivor.

    That value would of course fluctuate, just as for example, if someone today was defamed...if they were a person of high note, they would receive a larger sum than someone whose defamation caused little damage....

    Our Rabbis promulgated that concept, more than 3,000 years ago....and is in writing...as I said...at least for the past 2,000 years.
