One thing that I have never been able to understand is this: Why do people need bible studies? Or to put it in another way. Why God's word is not self-evident?

The reason is explained in the Bible. It is to reveal what is in a persons heart.
(Hebrews 4:12) For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints from the marrow, and is able to discern thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Those that Jesus taught God's word to either loved him or screamed for his blood. Should we expect it will not also divide people today?
