To be fair, this type of activity is not isolated to only the Greens.
While both the LNP and ALP have not, that I can recall, engaged in direct fundraising for legal costs, they have used membership funds to cover these costs. Most recently, the LNP QLD have confirmed that they will be funding the defamation case against Jones. Prior, the ALP funded, in part, the legal costs incurred by Craig Thompson.
In both these situations your a) and b) options could have applied as well.
