zurich, the problem with exporting solar cells is that the raw materials require carbon intensive industries. High purity silicon actually requires CO2 in its prodcution and the smelters require cheap power. So the materials to assemble the panels will need to be imported. The assembly itself will not be done here as that relies on cheap labour which we do not have either.
bacci, you are right that it will reduce our CO2 emissions, however the relative CO2 outputs will be higher OS than if they were smelted here. Indo coal is of a poorer quality and has less EPA regualtions. The coal itself is located under virgin carbon sinking rainforests in places like Kalimantan, which will need to be ripped up, the Greens seem to prefer that happen.
The way the Greens are going we are going to have higher CO2 concentrations in the future because of their misplaced ideology.
