Not to mention how well much of the Middle East has fared since the Islamic golden age of science and art that was brought undone by conservative governments stifling independent reasoning (science) for imitative thinking (definently not science). Throw in a few invasions and broken trade routes and you have yourself a crumbled empire..smells familiar?
