Councils say no to costly decorations

Three Melbourne councils say they will not be hanging up any street Christmas decorations this year because of power pole rental fees.

The fees were introduced this year as part of a safety plan, after a contractor received a severe electric shock while setting up decorations last Christmas.

The Yarra, Maribyrnong and Darebin councils say they can not justify the fees.

But the Municipal Association of Victoria's (MAV) Dick Ross says the power companies should not be criticised.

"I don't want to portray the electricity companies as being totally evil grinches at Christmas," he said.

"It's far better to ensure the safety of workers rather than to just ignore that."

"It's not the case that you will get no Christmas decorations, but it is the case that they'll be more expensive to put up," Mr. Gross said.

    .................

Monash is in the same boat and hasn't erected anything much except some corflute wrap around signage at the base of trees.

    Cheers,
    Tangrams
