Hey, Simgrund, we have a few things in common.
Spent a bit of time in Linz in a refugee camp before eventually staging on.My first permanent address was Northam Army camp, WA,, which was then a staging post for the debris of displaced persons after ww2.(.never knew my dad till I was 7 years+).... and now. Funny, I finished up back there at later date for military training, lol. The memories, lol.
Hey, had an Austrian mate called Heinz who did his stint in the Gulag. They received something like 50g per day of bread and some cabbage soup. The Russian guards got less and begged from them. He got caught stealing some bread, which got him a life sentence. Luckily, he was repatriated after some years.He had some awesome stories. The Alsatian dogs tethered around the camp missing in the mornings, eaten by wolves. Nobody did a runner there.My memories are of bombings, being strafed on refugee trains, searchlights, sirens, trenches full of corpses..... and the hell of the firebombings. I had sweating, screaming, nightmares into my twenties.
Never been back to that part of Europe. Dont think I could stand it.
So, Simgrund, maybe you can understand my feeling for the kids of Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan....... Gaza.
You have no idea how bombings can affect a kid.. Can you really blame them for being twisted and bitter in life..... "radicalised" , even. ? It seems to happen.
