Your suggestion that "one can't get blood out of a stone" was probably the reason why CIENA was "let off lightly".
It may well be the reason but an alternative reason could be that they were just a minor user of the technology....like Juniper, who also came to an early agreement in Stat Mux I.
And so it was deemed that the money was better employed in reaching agreement than being expended on the litigation which would have yielded little more.
