Both leaders are unpopular in net negative territory. Morrison has the edge on popularity just as Turnbull did but that is usual for sitting PMs. The real measure is who will the voters choose as a govt and its clear now that for nearly three years they would have preferred a Labor govt which is a Shorten led Labor govt. When Shorten becomes PM if his govt does well his ratings will likely rocket and the new Liberal Opposition leader will sink into the doldrums. Thats the usual way!

There are exception though as Abbott was always unpopular both as Opposition leader and even when he became PM. Now thats unusual, that Bill Shorten rated higher than Abbott when Abbott was PM. Abbott stank so much that his own shafted him and the voters were happy with that which in itself is extra-ordinary, as the norm is for voters to be annoyed with leadership changes. Repeating the dose though and outing a more popular Malcolm Turnbull who always rated better than Shorten was a massive mistake by the liberals. They got away with one leader knifed and should have realised that two would be the final straw. It splits the Party further and look at the result. Wentworth gone, Julia Banks defected, Julie Bishop going, Kellie O’dwyer going, Scullion going, Pyne going and it would not surprise if more to go. All this when the govt is at its most vulnerable and the election looming in May.
