... “Speaking from the Bassendean headquarters of Eilbeck Cranes, one of the companies awarded a contract for work on the new railcar manufacturing facility being built in Midland, the Premier announced his government was weeks away from signing a contract for construction of the Tonkin Gap.
“This is a massive road and rail project that will be part of the Ellenbrook rail line and also solve the biggest road bottleneck in WA,” Mc McGowan said.
The works, expected to create 3000 jobs, will mean the widening of Tonkin Highway to three lanes between Perth Airport and Ellenbrook, as well as the construction of new bridges and interchanges.
The median strips between Bayswater and Malaga will also be prepared to facilitate the Morley-Ellenbrook line.

WA Government to fix ‘Tonkin Gap’ with $400m rebuild

It's probably the most complained about stretch of road in the northern suburbs, a horror patch of highway for commuters morning and night.
It's called the “Tonkin Gap”, the old two lane system that sits between the billion-dollar North Link project and the billion-dollar Gateway interchange near the international airport.

But change is coming.
A $400 million rebuild will go out to tender next Monday and will include widening the two lanes to three in both directions, a new traffic bridge and for the first time physical evidence that a rail line to Ellenbrook will become a reality.

The project will include earthworks for rail, concrete barricades and the below-ground link into Baywater station.
"It’s such a signature project for us but it means so much to this corridor and the people living in Ellenbrook and Brabham and Dayton it's so important,” Ms Saffioti said.
Dealing with traffic congestion is an ongoing battle for government.
New figures show Perth motorists spend an average of 59 minutes in their daily drive to work. That's 10 minutes more than in 2005.
Ms Saffioti said the Tonkin Gap project will save about 11 minutes on the peak going north and in the morning six minutes going south.
