Somalia: Puntland president promises strict security after jail escape 1 Mar 1, 2007 - 12:30:15 PM
GAROWE, Somalia Mar 1 (Garowe Online) - The president of the semiautonomous Puntland region said on Thursday that his police would take strict measures to ensure the safety and stability of Puntland.
Speaking from the regional capital Garowe, Gen. Mohamud “Adde” Muse condemned clan militias who attacked the central prison and escaped with 3 inmates sentenced to death.
President Adde said Puntland security forces were on the hunt for the escaped fugitives and the militias who waged the attack.
Yesterday, an unknown number of local militias attacked the central prison, which is located at the heart of Garowe, and escaped with 3 relatives sentenced in connection with the killing of a Puntland soldier last year.
One person was reported killed and 13 others wounded during the firefight between militias and jail guards.
The Garowe prison’s gates were open and there no inmates inside as of Thursday, according to residents.
The Puntland president appealed to the public to keep the peace and security of the region.
“Puntland will take tough measures against those responsible for the insecurity,” President Adde Muse said.
Meanwhile, a Puntland soldier was gunned down in the commercial capital of Bossaso today by unidentified gunmen.
Sources in Bossaso told Garowe Online on the condition of anonymity that the victim was targeted by relatives of 2 men he killed in Bossaso in the recent past.
Bossaso police were on the hunt for the killers but so far no suspects have been detained.
